After a deadly breath taking span of 45 days, Labourers stuck in Tunnel deployed for prolonged project of joining “Char Dham" was going fine. On the day of Diwali, a bad news came that 41 Labourers got stuck inside the tunnel due to cracking in the tunnel, stones blocked the tunnel from the front side. This was nothing less than a stone on heart for the whole country. Everyone was praying for the wellbeing of the Labourers. Rescue operation started as the condition was critical. SDRF, NDRF and ARMY Staff were deployed for rescue operation of the stuck workers.
America made Auger machine was brought from America to drill the stone cladding inside the tunnel. The machine worked up to 45 meters but after this the router of the machine got trapped in between the iron rods and hope of the rescue of the labourers came to a halt. The families of the trapped got panicked after this. Now, the Chief Minister of State Uttrakhand took over the charge and Monitoring of the rescue operation also being started from the PMO Office. Other alternate of the vertical drilling also were lined in to speed up the rescue work. Air Force, Medical staff and all other preliminary faculties were put on the mission mode to meet the requirements of the situation. Vertical Drilling also failed. This put wrinkles on everyone’s forehead. Finally a committee was constituted the chalk out the other possibilities for rescue operation. It was decided to use the Rat-Hole Technique to counterfeit the giant rock, Rat-Hole mining is a traditional mining technique in which old fashioned equipment's are used for illegal mining of coal in the eastern area of India like Jharkhand, Sikkim, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Orissa etc.. After 1 and half day of mining with hammers, chisel and other penetration tools, it made to 40 mm diameter of the hole and finally the labourers were rescued. After rescue, they were welcomed with garlands, and then taken to the Health Center situated at Rishikesh.
